5 Steps to Prepare Your Lawn for Spring

Mar 10, 2021

Spring is near and it’s time to prepare your lawn. But what does that entail? We’ve broken it down into 5 simple steps to be sure your lawn and landscaping are ready for the warmer months ahead.

  1. Clean up leaves and debris

Winter leaves and other such debris that have accumulated will need to be removed in order to allow the grass and other plant life to flourish. A leaf blower is the best tool to easily clear away these lightweight items. A rake will also do the job but requires more time and labor. Clearing out the debris helps to ensure that any fertilizer or weed killer that is distributed will be absorbed properly. Which brings us to step 2.

    2. Fertilize and Prevent Weeds

Once the grass is clear of any debris, it’s time to apply fertilizer and pre-emergent in early spring to feed the grass and prevent any weeds from growing. After the initial application, it will need to be reapplied in roughly 6-8 weeks.

    3. Mow

For a thicker, more lush lawn, pay attention to the length of the grass before mowing it. For best results, wait until the grass is at least two inches tall before that first mow in Spring. After that, it’s best to follow the general guideline of cutting one third of the grass length each mow session.

    4. Apply mulch

Mulching around plant beds not only looks good but also protects against weed growth, improves the soil, and keeps plant roots insulated against weather changes. While mulch is available in wood, rock, and synthetic forms, wood mulch is the best medium for reaping the aforementioned benefits.

    5. Trim trees and bushes

Be sure to keep trees trimmed of dead branches for the safety of both people and property. Trimming any branches higher than can be reached from the ground is best left to professionals. Ideally this should be done every few years. Shrubbery should be trimmed throughout the year as needed to maintain the health and appearance of the plants.
