Sod or Seed: Which is Better for your Yard?

Apr 05, 2021

If you’re starting a new lawn or your current grass is looking a little sparse, you have options when it comes to creating the lush, green lawn you desire. You can choose from Sod or Seeds to accomplish your goal. There are advantages and disadvantages to both depending upon your budget, the weather, and the amount of patience you possess.

Both sod and seeds can yield a lush green lawn when installed properly so let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both.

Sod

Pros

  •  Sod’s biggest advantage is that it can provide a lush green lawn instantly and be ready for use in just a few short weeks.
  • Due to the fact that the grass is established, there is very little chance for weeds to have germinated so there will be few to none of those.
  • Sod’s instant lawn can provide erosion control and isn’t subject to being washed away as seeds are.

Cons

  • The near instant gratification of sod comes at a higher price point than seed.
  • There is a short transplant window, and installation must be done properly to ensure its success.
  • Sod comes with more limited choices of grass.

Seed

Pros

  •  There is a lower cost to seeding and less labor than sod installation.
  • There are more types of grass to choose from in seed form.

Cons

  • Seeds require higher initial maintenance than sod and take much longer to become a usable lawn. It can take up to 3 months to be ready for traffic.
  • Seeds are subject to being washed away in rainy conditions which would mean the process would need to be started all over again.
  • A newly seeded lawn does not deter the growth of weeds as they will compete with each other for space.
