Keep Your Lawn Healthy During the Colder Months

Sep 01, 2021

With the cold months of Winter looming in the not so distant future, now is the time to start preparing your lawn for the cooler months ahead. Here are a few things you can start doing now, to help ensure you have a lush green lawn when Spring rolls back around.

Cleanup

Rake and remove leaves and grass clippings to allow for more sunlight to reach the lawn. In warmer months, they act as a buffer against the blazing sun but in cold weather, they block the much-needed sunlight that will help keep your grass healthy.

Mow Less

Your lawn growth slows down significantly once the weather starts to cool so there’s no need to mow as often. Keep the blade on your mower higher and cut only when necessary to avoid cutting it too short and damaging the roots.

Water Less

Now is the time to slow down that watering schedule. Pay attention to the moisture level of your lawn and never water when it seems to be sufficiently damp. Watering too much can lead to fungal issues and rot. When you do water, you’ll want to do so first thing in the morning.

Aerate and Fertilize

Now is the time to aerate the soil in your lawn. If you do not have an aerator you can use a rake or enlist the help of our experienced team to do it for you. You’ll also want to fertilize your lawn to keep it nourished throughout the Winter.

Keep Weeds in Check

Weeds can flourish during the Winter so you’ll want to get ahead of removing them as soon as they become visible once the weather cools. You can do this by pulling them by hand or by applying a weed killer.

If you want to take the guesswork out of preparing your lawn for the cold weather ahead, give us a call and we’ll come up with a plan that has your lawn looking the healthiest on the block all year round!
